Headlines: CAF has been recognized as one of the winner NGOs in Grassroots Initiatives to Address Under nutrition in South Asia for its project named "Baby Friendly Villages" - CAF started the capacity development program for local NGOs under support of USAID/CDP - CAF won the PCH projects in Takhar and Badakhshan provinces under support of USAID Grant.

INTRODUCTION

Care of Afghan Families (CAF) is a non-governmental, non-political, not for profit and independent organization.

 

 

BACKGROUND

The organization has been established in Kabul and registered in Ministry of Planning of Islamic Transitional Government of Afghanistan in January 1, 2003 and the Registration is No 946. CAF is also reregistered with the Ministry Of Economy based on the requirement of the government and the registration number 68 dated September 29, 2005.

Care of Afghan Families (CAF) is an initiation of senior Afghan staff from other international organizations that have many years of working experience in Afghanistan.

The aim of founders of CAF was to transfer the experiences and expertise from several international organizations to an Afghan organization in order to ensure the sustainability of efforts as well as provide opportunities for Afghans to use their full potentials in humanitarian and development activities.

Currently, CAF has total of 1211 full time paid staff, 1500 Community Health Workers (volunteer), 826 Health Posts, 1335 Health post level shora, 113 health facility health shora. CAF is running 82 health facilities, which includes 1 provincial hospital, 6 District Hospitals, 16 CHCs, 2 CHC+, 45 BHCs, 10 sub-centers, 2 mobile teams  in Takhar, Badakhshan, Faryab, and Kunduz provinces of Afghanistan.

MISSION STATEMENT

Enable the families to fight against diseases and its causes - poverty, unawareness and injustice.  

The word (Disease) in the above statement means all kinds of individual and social problems that the families are faced with and prevent them from being in healthy status – to develop their full potentials.

 

 

OUR VISION

CAF is well known as the first reliable development partner of the community, among the society, the government and other development partners.

 

STRATEGIC DIRECTION

During the strategic planning exercise, while the community representatives participated actively, it was realized that, the organization work in three major directions in an integrated approach and make sure that all major cross-cutting concerns of the community has been addressed in the planning, implementation and evaluation stages of the projects. The three major working directions of the organization are:

 

                                 I.      Health,

                                II.      Education and Research,

                              III.      Community Development.

Grassroots Initiatives to Address Under nutrition in South Asia

Dhaka, August 5, 2009 ─ Twenty-one civil society organizations from across South Asia won grants today from a $840,000 award pool funded by the South Asia Region Development Marketplace (DM). The winners received up to $40,000 each to implement innovative ideas on how to improve nutrition in their respective countries. Care of Afghan Families (CAF), from Afghanistan was one of the winners.

Innovative ideas, such as a proposal from Care of Afghan Families called Baby Friendly Village, to improve the nutrition status of young children through focus not just on their mothers, but also on other family and village members was one of the winners.

“This award means the recognition of innovative ideas for tackling malnutrition programs. A regional platform like the DM is helping NGOs bring out innovative ideas, share experiences and learn from each other,” said Bashir Ahmad Hamid, Organizational Development Director of CAF.

Capacity Development Program (CDP)

Capacity building is one of the important objectives of CAF. Currently CAF with financial support of USAID/CDP started to conduct 7 modules of training to Afghan NGOs in Kabul from July 2009. The modules are 1. Project Management 2. Financial Management 3. Strategic Planning 4. Gender 5. Human Resource Management 6. Fund Raising 7. Organization Development.  Several participants from more than 23 NGOs attended the training modules.
