Headlines: CAF has been recognized as one of the winner NGOs in Grassroots Initiatives to Address Under nutrition in South Asia for its project named "Baby Friendly Villages" - CAF started the capacity development program for local NGOs under support of USAID/CDP - CAF won the PCH projects in Takhar and Badakhshan provinces under support of USAID Grant.

Strategic Directions

CAF works in partnership with government, development and implementing partners in the following four directions, as far as possible through integrated approach:

  1. Health,

 HEALTH PROGRAM

Considering the need of our people and the institutional background of CAF, we will keep this strategic direction as the core area and will develop on what have been achieved during the past six years.

Working Principles of Health Program of CAF:

 

In addition to the above mentioned core values of the organization, all personnel of CAF as individuals and as groups respect the following principles in delivering health services:

1.    Treating all people with dignity, honesty and respect and considering healthy life as a basic right of every individual.

2.    Giving priority to groups in greatest need, especially women, children, the disabled and those stricken with poverty.

3.    Making evidence-based decisions.

  1. Promoting healthy lifestyles and discouraging practices proven to be harmful.

Health Program Outcomes:

The aim of health program of CAF is to contribute to the health policy outcomes of the MoPH to achieve:

  1. Maternal mortality ratio reduced from 1,600/ 100,000 live births to 400/100,000.

Priority Interventions in 2010-2015

  1. Basic Package of Health Services (BPHS) with focus on the quality of services to meet the standards.

Key stakeholders:

The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) of Afghanistan is the main stakeholder of health program of CAF. The organization will work in close coordination with the MoPH and will follow its standards and priorities in the provision of health services.

Donors, UN agencies (World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, UNFPA), and other national and international organizations working in health are the main stakeholders of CAF in the implementation of its health program.

 NUTRITION PROGRAM

 

Nutrition was an integrated program with health, in the previous strategic plan. As malnutrition is a serious problem in the country and CAF has institutional capabilities to address this need, we would like to include it as a separate strategic direction to be able to focus more seriously through systematic approaches.

Working Principles of Nutrition Program of CAF:

In addition to the above mentioned core values of the organization, all personnel of CAF as individuals and as groups respect the following principles in delivering nutrition services:

1.    Giving priority to groups in greatest need, especially women, children, the disabled and those stricken with poverty.

2.    Making evidence-based decisions.

  1. Promoting healthy lifestyles and discouraging practices proven to be harmful.

Nutrition Program Outcomes:

The aim of nutrition program of CAF is to contribute to the followings by the year 2015:

  1. Infant mortality rate reduced from 129/1000 live births to 55/1000.

Priority Interventions in 2010-2015

  1. Promoting optimal feeding practices of infants and young child feeding (early initiation of breastfeeding, exclusive breastfeeding for first six months of life, introducing appropriate complementary feeding at age six months, continuation of breastfeeding for two years).

Key stakeholders:

The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), the Ministry of Food and Agriculture of Afghanistan are the main stakeholders of nutrition program of CAF. Unicef, FAO, UNDP, WFP, MI, GAIN, World Bank, USAID and other international agencies are also the key stakeholders and investors in this program.

 

 EDUCATION PROGRAM

 

Education is one of the strategic directions of CAF since the beginning, and we have a lot of achievement in this area in the past 5 years. However; to emphasize more on the education and capacity building which is a serious need in Afghanistan, it was decided to focus only to this part as a strategic direction. In the next five years, we would like to work more systematically on this issue.

Working Principles of Education Program of CAF

In addition to the core values of CAF, all members of the organization consider the following principles in delivering education services:

 

1.    Respecting the religion and cultural values of people.

2.    Respecting the self-esteem, and personality of all people, regardless the level of knowledge they have,

  1. Empowering the participants through sharing of knowledge and enhancing their skills.

  2. Focus on the marginalized groups, such as persons with disabilities, women, and those living in rural areas or in poverty.

Education Program Outcomes:

The education program of CAF contributes in achieving the following national objectives:

  1. The enrollment rate in primary education increase to 100% for girls and boys.

  2. The quality of service provision has increased as a result of developed capacity and motivation of the staff members and volunteers of CAF and partners.

Grassroots Initiatives to Address Under nutrition in South Asia

Dhaka, August 5, 2009 ─ Twenty-one civil society organizations from across South Asia won grants today from a $840,000 award pool funded by the South Asia Region Development Marketplace (DM). The winners received up to $40,000 each to implement innovative ideas on how to improve nutrition in their respective countries. Care of Afghan Families (CAF), from Afghanistan was one of the winners.

Innovative ideas, such as a proposal from Care of Afghan Families called Baby Friendly Village, to improve the nutrition status of young children through focus not just on their mothers, but also on other family and village members was one of the winners.

“This award means the recognition of innovative ideas for tackling malnutrition programs. A regional platform like the DM is helping NGOs bring out innovative ideas, share experiences and learn from each other,” said Bashir Ahmad Hamid, Organizational Development Director of CAF.

Capacity Development Program (CDP)

Capacity building is one of the important objectives of CAF. Currently CAF with financial support of USAID/CDP started to conduct 7 modules of training to Afghan NGOs in Kabul from July 2009. The modules are 1. Project Management 2. Financial Management 3. Strategic Planning 4. Gender 5. Human Resource Management 6. Fund Raising 7. Organization Development.  Several participants from more than 23 NGOs attended the training modules.

 

Partnership Contract for Health Services

Current PPG projects under USAID support supposed to be ended on 23rd Oct, 2009. The new PCH projects under USAID support will be started from 24th Oct, 2009. CAF will work in Takhar and Badakhshan provinces during PCH project. CAF with partnership of SHDP in Takhar PCH project and with partnership of BARAN in cluster 1 Badakhshan will be the grant NGO and implement BPHS services.
